TEHRAN, Sep, 15, 2014 (FNA)- A senior Iranian lawmaker said the US is not serious in dealing with terrorism in the region and its airstrikes on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) positions in Iraq are limited measures in pursuit of Washingtons own interests in the region.
"Past experience shows that the US is looking for its own interests and not fighting terrorism," said Chairman of the Iranian Parliaments National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi in a meeting with Chairperson of the French Parliaments Defense Committee Patricia Adam in Tehran on Sunday.
Boroujerdi said it is for several years now that the ISIL terrorist group was operative in the region, and "had the US and its allies really been pursuing war on terrorism, why wouldnt have they taken action then".
"The terrorist groups have emerged and expanded in Syria and Iraq as a result of the supports of the US and its regional allies over the past years," he added.
The head of the French Parliaments Defense Committee, for her part, noted that France is aware of the threat of terrorist groups to global peace and security, and said, "The French National Assembly is planning to pass certain laws to prevent the membership of the French nationals in the terrorist groups."
She pointed to the status quo in the Tehran-Paris ties, and said, "France is interested in expanding its ties with Iran in political and economic areas."
In relevant remarks earlier on Sunday, Boroujerdi lashed out at the western countries for supporting the ISIL, and said the so-called anti-ISIL coalition is a political showoff.
"The anti-ISIL coalition is a new political game by the US to achieve its illegitimate goals in the region," Boroujerdi said.
He noted that the new scenario written by the US against ISIL can never influence the real fight underway against the terrorist group and its eventual defeat, and stressed, "The Iraqi people, government and army will control the ISIL."
