Iranian Parliamentary Delegation Heads to Geneva to Participate in Intl IPU Meeting
TEHRAN, March 16, 2014 (FNA)- A high-ranking Iranian Parliamentary Delegation left Tehran for the Swiss city of Geneva this morning to take part in the upcoming International Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to be held on March 16-20.
The eight-member delegation is headed by Secretary-General of the countrys inter-parliamentary group Moayyed Hosseini Sadr. The IPU is the international organization of Parliaments. It was established in 1889. The Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and cooperation among people and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.
The IPU supports the efforts of and works in close cooperation with the United Nations, whose objectives it shares. The Union also cooperates with regional inter-parliamentary organizations, as well as with international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations which are motivated by the same ideals. In October 2011, the IPU adopted its Strategy for 2012-2017 under the overall title "Better parliaments, stronger democracy".
The IPU is financed primarily by its members out of public funds. The site of the Unions Headquarters is Geneva (Switzerland). A day-long meeting is also to be held on the sidelines of the event to discuss cessation of violence and exploitation of women and children in wars and conflicts.
